The Bet

Roald Dahl´s story " Man From the South" takes place in a resort located in Jamaica. It starts with the narrator who has no name sitting beside the pool looking a a group of young people fulling around and notice a man walking by the the pool making little jumps in every step, his name was Carlos and ask for a chair to the narrator. Then, a girls and a sailor approached to them and took a seat, and the sailor offered a cigarette and light to the two gentlemen. Carlos took this as a chance and proposed a bet to the sailor but it wasn't any bet, the bet consisted that they went back to the hotel room and  the sailor should turn his lighter on for ten consecutive time. If he wins he gets a green Cadillac but if he looses he gives his little finger from his left hand away.the sailor thought about the bet for a wile and agreed. they were in the room and the sailor had light the lighter eight times but just after that a woman entered the room and stooped Carlos and explained to everyone that he had lost eleven cars and has collected forty seven fingers doing this bets and took some of her away too.

I really enjoy how Roald Dahl uses characterization to understand the character better and know more about him.
"He was immaculately dressed in a white suit and he walked very quickly with little bouncing strides, pushing himself high up onto his toes with each step. He had on a large creamy Panama hat..."

Roald uses smart ways so you can see the emotion of the character such as when he said " he walked very quickly with little bouncing strides" this makes you see the personality of a person and how he is joyfully jumping along the pool.
Another things about Roald is the way he uses imagery it makes it easier for you to understand such as characterization.

"It won't matter. Come to think of it, I can't remember ever in my life having had any use for the little finger on my left hand"

Even though this is kind of creepy it shows that the boy is just thinking on what he will win and not enough on what he will lose showing that he is to ambitious.

This story "Man from the South" is a really weird but interesting story that makes you think a lot. The story makes you think that the ambitious to have something you don't need can make you make wrong discussions such as the the kid did by being his finger. Also, the story gives a good theme that is treasure what you have and don't put in risk what really is important for you.

More Memories Ahead

Jonas has now been four weeks with to taking his pills to prevent the stirrings. He now knows lots of new stuff that he gained when the giver gave the memories to him, he knows the feeling of LOVE, ANGER and lots of other feelings. Jonas and Asher had a small fight (not fiscal fight) because Asher was playing withs his friends simulating as if they had guns and they were combating each other, for what in his point of view was a game because he didn't knew what really happened before when there were wars and people died, but Jonas did and he was kind of bother towards Asher for playing that game with out knowing what it really is. Later on in the book, Father talks to his family unit about the release of a twin he has to perform but he says that he will clean the new born and put him comfy. Jonas asked the Giver that what exactly happened to the last receiver who failed ten years ago. the Giver told him that her name was Rose Mary and that she couldn't resist the non pleasurable memories so she applied for release, which Jonas was forbidden to. Jonas was really curious about release and wanted to know what it was so the giver said that he could watch the video of the release father had made that morning. Jonas watch the video and realized that when you get release you get killed. Than made him get mad at his father because for lying to him. then the Giver told Jonas that she had a daughter named Rose Marry. Later on in the book the giver and Jonas are planning a

n scape plan so Jonas can get out of the community and go elsewhere.

Will I was reading this book I found a quote that really interested me and called my attention and it was when Jonas and the Giver were creating a plan to scape. "It was possible, what they had planned. Barley possible. If he failed, he will likely be killed. But what did that matter? If he stayed his life was no longer worth living." I analyzed this quote and saw that the Jonas was risking his life to safe others, and he didn't care if he got killed because he didn't want to live in a community that doesn't show the truth. He was trying to let the community know the truth and let them live in a real world.

In conclusion this part of  the book was really interesting and surprising because lots of stuff, one is that when you get released they kill you. Another thing is that Rose Marry was the receiver who failed ten years ago and it was the Givers son. Something that made this part of the book interesting was the way the author wrote it with the purpose of making you wanting to read more. I found this surprising because I  don't actually like to read book but I really enjoy reading this one. In conclusion, this book has been and continues to be really entertaining.
